The holders of the modern-time Olympic Games have made a point of emphasising that the Olympics are so much more than a mere sports event: they are also a fusion of the greatest achievements in education and culture.

The 2012 Summer Olympics to be held in London is launched by a giant programme entitled the Cultural Olympiad culminating with the London 2012 Festival four weeks before the opening of the sports games. The organisers are hailing the event as the largest and best herald of the actual sports celebration of all time.
