“The Museum Chooses. Acquisitions of the Latvian National Museum of Art in 2012”
The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, Riga
January 16 – February 17, 2013
On the evening of January 16 an exhibition “The Museum Chooses. Acquisitions of the Latvian National Museum of Art in 2012”, which displays part of the latest purchases for the collection of the Latvian National Museum of Art, was unveiled at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Riga. During the last two decades, due to the fact that the financial resources of the museum were rather limited, the majority of acquisitions were based only on donations and bequests. 2009 was the last year when the programme “Projects of National Significance in the Accredited Museums”, administered by the State Culture Capital Foundation, functioned. The Latvian National Museum of Art had always actively participated in these project competitions, because only due to purchases the museum can implement purposeful policy and choose what it really needs for the development of its collection. At the end of 2012, thanks to the possibility of budget modifications, which included also the financial support for the acquisition of contemporary artworks for the Latvian National Museum of Art, the museum had the opportunity to acquire a fairly great number of significant artworks. Collections of paintings, sculpture, graphic art and photography, as well as decorative art and design were extended with new artworks. At the opening of the exhibition Māra Lāce, the Director of the Latvian National Museum of Art, emphasized that the selection process was based on a number of considerations. Firstly the works selected reflect the latest processes and topicalities in Latvian contemporary art, and secondly – they represent those Latvian artists, who until yet had not been sufficiently represented in the museum's collections. Here is our photo reportage from the exhibition!
