- The 14th Istanbul Biennial -
“SALTWATER – A Theory of Thought Forms”
Istanbul, Turkey
September 5 - November 1, 2015

The 14th Istanbul Biennial is taking place September 5 – November 1, and features more than 80 artists, among them oceanographers, underwater archeologists, theosophists and neuroscientists. Spread over 36 venues, the Biennial stretches across both sides of the Bosporus and offers exhibitions in museums, on ferries, and in hotels, as well as in old bank buildings, garages, gardens, schools, shops and private homes.

In speaking about the conceptual core of the Biennial, Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, the curator of the 14th Istanbul Biennial, mentions the currents that make up the waters of the Bosporus and the differences in salinity of this sea water, and makes them into metaphors for today's Istanbul: in terms of the currents of its peoples and ideas, and the flows of war, weapons and love – things that are are not always visible. Archeology and psychoanalysis are Christov-Bakargiev's research tools. With the title of Saltwater, she also alludes to digital technologies. In thinking about chemical changes and the impact of the environment on physical materials, Christov-Bakargiev cites the politics of technology and its fragility, and states that “this world of power is actually very delicate. This is what alchemy and philosophy were about. And it is this kind of thinking that makes up the foundation of the Saltwater exhibition.”
