OPEN CALL: Helsinki International Curatorial Programme 2018 0

Since 2013, Helsinki International Curatorial Programme has offered annually up to four one-month residencies in Helsinki for curators of contemporary art. The programme is co-organised by Frame Contemporary Art Finland and HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme.

The HICP curators-in-residence will live and work at HIAP’s international residency centre on the island of Suomenlinna, a 15 minute ferry-trip away from the centre of Helsinki.

HIAP offers the resident curators a combined workspace and accommodation. Frame provides them with a working grant (39 euros per residency day) and a travel allowance from and to the curator’s place of residence.

Both organisations provide the curator fellows with individualised assistance and networking support tailored to their project or research. The HICP curators have access to the international residency community and programme of events at HIAP, while Frame provides contacts with extensive networks of Finnish artists and other art professionals.

A public event (e.g. a lecture, workshop, screening) is organised as part of the residencies. The events are integrated either to the programme at Frame and HIAP (for instance to the ‘Meet the Curator’ discussion series) or organised at the premises of our local partner organisations. The main purpose of the public event is to share the fellows’ curatorial research and projects with local professional audience, but the format of the event can vary depending on the specific characteristics of each project.

The length of the curatorial residency is one calendar month. In 2018, the residencies will be organised as follows:

May 2018: 2 one-month curator residencies
November 2018: 2 one-month curator residencies

The applicants are asked to state which residency period they prefer in their application form.

The selections will be made by a jury of local artists and art professionals, including representatives of Frame and HIAP. The selected fellows will be notified by the end of December 2017.

Please note that due to the large number of applicants, we are unfortunately unable to give feedback about individual applications.

The application period is 2–31 October. The deadline for the applications is Tuesday, October 31, 2017 (11:59 pm, GMT +2)

APPLICATION CRITERIA

The aims of the programme are two-fold:

1) To allow internationally active, professional curators the chance to connect with the local contemporary art field and plan projects in collaboration with artists and partner organisations operating in Finland.

2) To support curatorial research in its diverse and emergent forms.

The applicant should have at least 2–3 years professional experience in curating (relevant, formal education is not obligatory but can be considered as an advantage), either within an institutional context or independently.

A clearly stated research interest or a project outline. Please note that HICP supports first and foremost curatorial research, professional development and connections. The programme can be connected with other, production-oriented projects, but it does not generally allow the realisation of large-scale productions.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

To apply, applicants must submit the following by using an online application form: hiap.gruppo.fi

-- Short bio and a curatorial statement

-- Working plan describing the professional activities the applicant plans to undertake during the residency period

-- Presentation materials of the applicant's previous projects (links to curator's website and/or other online material is sufficient).

Applications or supporting material sent by e-mail without using the online application form will not be taken into consideration.

Please note the following guidelines regarding additional material supporting your application:

It is advised that all the supporting material is stored online and can be downloaded via the use of hyperlinks, which are mentioned in the application. Please make sure that the links do not expire before you have received the decision of the Jury.

All image / video / sound samples should be stored and shared online. It is advised to use platforms such as YouTube, Vimeo, etc, so that downloading isn’t required to  access the material.

Please note that we are unable to contact applicants upon receipt of each application, to address individual inquiries regarding proposals, or to comment further upon the selection process.
