Luīze Rukšāne
Luīze Rukšāne (1995) is a young artist who graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia in 2021 with a BA in audiovisual and media arts. She has studied at the Faculty of Architecture at Riga Technical University, and has furthered her education at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Porto, as well as by taking beekeeping courses at the Latvian University of Agriculture. In 2015 she graduated from the Janis Rozentāls Riga Art School, where she specialised in painting. Rukšāne has been creating and participating in exhibitions since 2017. She works with various visual art media and organises exhibitions for her contemporaries. In her creative practice, Rukšāne expresses her love for the humane. Her drawings reflect the themes of growing up, growing, and memories.

A series of roadside drawings from the exhibition Smagās ainavas (Heavy Landscapes) in Portugal. It is about how some landscapes become “heavy” when you see them repeatedly. They pile up like a heap on your shoulders. I look at the meadow and the birch grove as a child, when my mother took us to the shop to buy mushroom-flavoured chips (my first childhood memory); I see the same grove again and again every year, and every year, “little Luīzes”, my past selves, look back at me. The more they look back, the harder it is to keep and contain everything. The landscapes become “heavy”. One can learn from them.

A series of four drawings of one island. The island is in the middle of my pond and always had a thicket and one birch tree growing on it. In spring, beavers from the nearby beaver bog took over my island and gnawed the birch down. I waited for the solstice and burnt the ruined island. After the solstice, my friend’s brother started living with my grandmother in the countryside to recover from his two years in Berlin. After having spent two weeks in my grandmother’s company, he built a convent for one person out of wooden pallets.
