The Arterritory Salon

A pop-up gallery within the framework of the ATBALSTISSIMO/SUPPORTISSIMO project

From November 26 to the beginning of the new year, the art and culture portal Arterritory.com will create a temporary art salon/platform in the Putti gallery space at Peitavas iela 5. Featuring an exhibition of works by 18 artists/artist groups that will also be available for purchase, it will be a place for talking, discussing, delving into art, and indulging in art.

The ideological backbone of the Arterritory Salon is the very concept of ‘the salon’, a term that has over the years been generalised and deprived of its original content. The underpinning of the exhibition is the underived nature of the salon, created and refined in the Age of Enlightenment as a centre of philosophical and intellectual thought and discussion where credence was given not only to having the courage to argue and criticise but also to exhibiting tolerance for the other and a willingness to interact. And art is indeed one of the strongest catalysts for conversation as well as a willing partner for one’s internal dialogue. It evokes reflection, gives life piquancy, and can sometimes even give one wings.

This is also a moment in which art has become a crucial necessity in our lives. At a time when physical mobility is limited, art is a tool that can expand reality, allowing us to freely roam and enter other worlds.

The term ‘salon’ has another important meaning in the history of art. It is also the title of the official art exhibition that, from the middle of the 18th century to the end of the 19th, marked the greatest recurring event of artistic life to take place in western Europe. At its time, the Paris Salon was the touchstone for artists, collectors, and creative observers – a place to meet, see, and talk about the latest developments in the domain of art.

The Arterritory Salon has been created within the framework of the ATBALSTISSIMO project – an undertaking that began last spring with the opening of the Arterritory.com virtual gallery, a support campaign for artists and a response to the all-encompassing crisis. The concept behind the project is set into its name, ATBALSTISSIMO, which is a combination of two words – the lively Italian bravissimo and the sobering Latvian word atbalsts, meaning ‘support’; it is intended as a gesture of solidarity. 90 percent of the sale value of a work of art goes directly to its creators.

Works by the following artists will be on view at the Arterritory Salon: Māris Bišofs, Andris Eglītis, Andris Grīnbergs, Kaspars Groševs, Indriķis Ģelzis, Helēna Heinrihsone, Harald Jegodzienski, Maija Kurševa, MAREUNROL'S, Sarmīte Māliņa & Kristaps Kalns, Ģirts Muižnieks, Katrīna Neiburga, Elita Patmalniece, Dainis Pundurs, Zane Hanele Putniņa, Aivars Vilipson, Artūrs Virtmanis.

This will also be a great opportunity to supplement your library with books and annual magazines published by the art and culture portal Arterritory.com – Arterritory Conversations and Arterritory Conversations with Collectors, which will be available for purchase in the gallery.

*Based on the Ministry of Culture’s hygiene and safety protocol regulating the activities of museums, Arterritory.com will follow and enforce the requirements concerning physical distancing and disinfection during opening hours at the Putti gallery.
