On 30 August, the solo exhibition Succumbing to Temptation by Latvian artist Aleksandrs Breže will open at Kogo Gallery in Tartu, Estonia. It is the artist’s first solo show in Estonia and it's organised in collaboration with LOOK! Gallery in Riga.

For Aleksandrs Breže, environmental design and the functionality of the objects we surround ourselves with are the main sources of inspiration. He is passionate about the narrow distinction between contemporary art and object design – how the first can be domesticated and the latter used for contemplation. Breže enlivens pieces of furniture and interior elements by playing with associations and blending boundaries between traditional and futuristic aesthetics. Through abstract spatial installations, he explores the clash between written laws, religious values and the harsh reality of institutional control. His art delves into the struggle for individuality amidst enforced conformity.

The upcoming exhibition, Succumbing to Temptation, is open from 30 August until 12 October 2024 at Kogo Gallery in Aparaaditehas on Kastani Street 42, Tartu, Estonia. The gallery is open for visits Wed–Fri at 12–18, Sat at 12–16. The exhibition is part of Kogo Gallery’s this year’s programme Performing Existence, in dialogue with the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 entitled Arts of Survival.

The exhibition is organised in collaboration with LOOK! Gallery in Riga, Latvia as part of an exhibition exchange between the two galleries. Later this year, 7 – 30 November, LOOK! Gallery will host a solo exhibition by Estonian artist Laura Põld, the show being co-produced with Kogo Gallery.

Succumbing to Temptation is supported by the City of Tartu, the Cultural Endowment of Estonia and the State Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia.

Aleksandrs Breže (1994) graduated from the Graphic Art Department at Gerrit Rietveld Academie (Amsterdam) and the Estonian Academy of Arts (Tallinn). Together with artist Armands Freibergs, he runs the project subspatial.xyz, which evolves around an interest in the relationship between the human body, our environment, graphic design, technology and material science. Breže has a proven talent for intricately weaving sculptural narratives, for example, when reflecting memories from his upbringing and study years, as notably showcased in his debut solo exhibition Optimism-Confidence-Charity (2023, LOOK! Gallery, Riga).
