ART AND THE EQUATION FOR LUCK

Arterritory.com

20.12.2024

We wish you good luck in 2025 and send you an equation that cannot be solved mathematically. It has come about from the creative thinking of two artists; namely, Latvian artist Krišs Salmanis has paraphrased the painting oeuvre of French artist Bernar Venet, the subject of the exhibition Bernar Venet. Painting: From Rational to Virtual. 1966–2024, produced by Arterritory and set to be on display at the Art Museum Riga Bourse starting 24 January 2025. Its central axis is mathematics, which, in Venet’s words, contains “the highest possible level of abstraction in art.”

Like a scientist whose only activity is research, I try to conceptualize unique ideas in the field of art, conceptions that seemed inconceivable until now.” – Bernar Venet.

Perhaps the most important thing for us at this time is to re-examine our own preconceptions – of what is right, what is safe, what is possible, what is acceptable – thus making room for new ideas, possibilities, conversations, dreams and collaborations. Art is the key that allows us to do this.

That is why as the year comes to a close, we’ve put together 12 insights into why making time for art – looking at it, supporting it, participating in it, owning it, making it more accessible to the public, talking about it and discussing it – is one of the most valuable investments we can give ourselves in the New Year.

Art is part of a nation’s image; it indicates that a particular place is educated, creative and prosperous.

Art guarantees security by building an empathetic and cohesive society.

The arts are integral to a nation’s economy, contributing to its development and budget.

The arts help us understand the present moment as well as world events.

Art promotes encounters with the self and self-reflection.

Art helps us find answers to the great existential questions.

Art provokes individual creativity and development; it stimulates critical thinking and can offer unexpected solutions to work and life issues that may not even be related to art.

Art unites and brings together people who otherwise would have never met.

Art heals: it stimulates longevity as well as neuroplasticity and a sense of purpose, thereby strengthening one’s immunity; it keeps the mind sharp, training the brain much like physical exercise trains the body; and lastly, it stimulates us visually, emotionally and cognitively.

Art is a record of history that enables us to view our past and better understand human development.

Art is a sign of a nation’s identity.

Art makes our lives meaningful; it gives our lives value other than just the desire to survive.

Believe in the uniqueness of art – it is an opportunity to encounter luck!

In gratitude for this year,
