On June 25, Art Vilnius International Contemporary Art Fair was launched in the Lithuanian capital, on view through 28 June 2015. The largest art fair in the Baltic States, Art Vilnius is held at the LITEXPO Lithuanian Exhibition and Congress Centre in Vilnius.
It has been increasingly often asked during recent years, what is contemporary art and how do you define it? It well may be that a visit to the Vilnius art fair will not help you find an answer to the question. However, it is definitely sure to prompt another string of questions as to what art – not only the contemporary kind – is in general. Covering an area of 15,000 square metres, the venue offers a display of a diversity of styles, techniques and genres. While a huge part of the works seem to be a repetition of things already seen, some artists’ takes on ‘the familiar’ are nevertheless a sight for sore eyes.
Last year’s Art Vilnius featured 65 galleries from 18 countries. The exhibition was viewed by approximately 19,000 visitors – which gives an idea of the intensity of what the art fair and the individual galleries had to offer. This year, artists and their works are represented at the art fair by 55 art galleries from Belarus, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
