Virtual gallery ‒ in support of Ukraine
Supportissimo by Arterritory
The Supportissimo project emerged at the time when we were all hit hard by the pandemic, and it was created as a way to help artists directly by buying their works.
But as the pandemic started to retreat and we were all hoping to resume normal human life without restrictions and threats, a disaster happened: the aggressive invasion of the land of Ukraine by the Russian Federation. Under these circumstances, art professionals cannot remain passive bystanders. They do not possess huge wealth, they do not have any political leverage at their disposal ‒ but they do have their art. Art filled with love and care for the world, its minutest details and its most diverse ways of expression. This art by definition is already confronting violence and war.
We call on Latvian professional artists to make their contribution to support the people of Ukraine, people who now find themselves in the middle of a war. The works you donate will be shown at the Supportissimo virtual gallery and all proceeds from any sale will go directly to the account created at ziedot.lv in support of the Ukrainian people.
The idea of the project is very simple: if a visitor of the virtual gallery likes any of the works on view and wants to make his or her contribution to the support campaign, they will need to contact us at info@arterritory.com and we will reserve the piece for them. Once we have confirmed that the work is indeed available, the buyer will have to transfer the amount given as the price of the work to ziedot.lv (‘Stand with Ukraine!’) and send us the bank statement as proof of transaction.
The whole thing is very simple.
And we hope that the works purchased this way will acquire a double meaning for their new owners ‒ not just the joy of living side by side with art, of the positive energy it carries, but also the satisfaction that we get from a good and just deed ‒ helping people in an hour of disaster.
Our dear friends, artists we have been writing about for many years now, supporting you in your creative initiatives and your growth ‒ if you are with us on this and want to contribute your works to Supportissimo virtual charity gallery, please contact us! The address is the same: info@arterritory.com
It is hard feeling fear, despairing and giving up hope. Helping each other is so much easier. And now is a time when every little detail, every action, every thought, every charitable initiative plays a part in the general balance of forces.
Together we will withstand. And Ukraine will withstand. This proud and beautiful country and its people need our help.

MAREUNROL’S
MAREUNROL’S. Episode 1. Object / Wood, metal, 30x30 cm, 2010
The 2008–2009 financial crisis in the United States also rocked Europe. In 2010, a number of Eurozone countries (including Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Italy and Spain) were pulled into heavy economic turbulence as they were unable to pay their external debts and thus threatened the financial stability of Europe as a whole. At the time, business analysts sarcastically announced that the main fashion trend was austerity. And even though in his autumn/winter 2010/11 collection for Dior John Galliano defiantly urged people to stand up against the crisis with loads of flowers, thus quoting from Christian Dior’s legendary 1953 Tulip collection, the fashion industry apparently reassessed its values. With all the instruments available in its creative arsenal (including shows and unusual partnerships) attempting to secure the time-strewn feeling that fashion is more than just clothes.
After his studies in Antwerp, Rolands had returned to the reality of the crisis in huddled-down Riga. It was clear that from now on one would have to fulfil one’s dreams differently. At the same time, however, those dreams had not disappeared anywhere. Stunned by reality, they were just levitating confusedly in space.
The Episode 1 collection was MAREUNROL'S second appearance at Hyères, after already once winning at the festival. They concluded the Hyères 2010 show of participants and winners, thus becoming a kind of emotional high point of the event. Episode 1 masterfully combined wearability and poetry, reality and dreams, all with an elusive shot of alchemy. Episode 1 was the story of almost everyone present and also about the designers themselves, metaphorically embodied in the form of a 21st-century urban-jungle Cinderella who longs to find (and also not lose) herself again. Who longs to survive, using everything possible as sources of strength, including amulets and totems, until – as often happens in fairy tales – even the birds come to her assistance... By picking up a jacket, the bow on the back of a coat, landing on the models’ heads and sleeves and, when everything seems at its worst, literally making them fly. Along with their thoughts and emotions... For good reason, in the showroom after MAREUNROL'S exhibition many people searched for the jacket picked up by the birds...
As MAREUNROL's themselves say, the birds arrived completely unbidden. And a Latvian sculptor helped to materialise their form.

MAREUNROL’S. The Bugler of Tālava. Sketch / Paper, ink, 21x29 cm, Summer 2017
The word ‘collection’ does not befit The Bugler of Tālava (Tālavas taurētājs). If only because in this particular case it is too limiting. The Bugler of Tālava is a message that goes well beyond the limits of clothing. Created together with musician Shipsea and director Elmārs Seņkovs as part of a multimedia project-cum-costume and sound performance, it premiered in the summer of 2017 at the Valmiera Theatre Festival. It is inspired by and based on The Bugler of Tālava (1902), a ballad by author and playwright Rūdolfs Blaumanis (1863–1908). One of the most patriotic works in Latvian literature, the work tells the story of a fearless bugler who warned his people and their leader of approaching enemy troops. His vigilance and courage in the darkness of night up in the watchtower at the top of a spruce tree, as well as his resistance to bribery, disregard for the enemy’s stinging arrows and struggle to his last breath, decided the fate of the nation and added his name to its list of heroes.
MAREUNROL’S moved the core values encoded in the ballad to the present day, a time when the world is once again facing dramatic changes and the lack of new leaders is becoming an ever more pressing issue. The Bugler of Tālava is an anthem for brave people, a visual ballad of courage as a crucial core value in initiating and implementing change. It is about well-considered and justified courage that has nothing to do with recklessness or screaming patriotism. Courage as the future-oriented responsibility of the nation/states/world that forms a collective subconscious and acts as a engine for development.
Even though the visual character of the garments for The Bugler of Tālava contains a certain lightness, they are extremely dense in materiality, thus accenting the feeling that everything has continuity. According to MAREUNROL’S: “Fashion is like encoded information; one must know how to read it, building new codes from existing ones in order to move forward, because this is the only possible path to development.” The cunning enemy messengers in The Bugler of Tālava’s garments, who offer the hero gold in exchange for his silence, are transformed into a masterful and almost surreally tactile shading achieved through prints. Inspired by the work of the Latvian graphic artist Dainis Rožkalns, the prints also include Latvian landscapes. The jacket-cloak, which can be worn in a variety of ways, calls to mind the stitched cape of the ancient bugler reincarnated in the form of modern fashion.
The Bugler of Tālava premiered in the historical railway depot in the town of Valmiera, before the show surreally confronting viewers with their own pasts: Soviet-era rubbish, household waste and other “garbage” of our times that still lives on in our subconscious and must be peeled away like the layers of an onion in order to be noticed and perceived, because that is the only way to get rid of it and move on. Into a new world, with a new “I” hardened by its own experience, symbolically marked by the path of light at the end of the performance along which the audience, as well as the participants in the performance, left the venue. Without returning to the past.
